The agricultural autonomy of France

A challenge to be faced

Ovalto has continued to move forward with the diversification of its activities allowing a young farmer to set up a 750-hectare farm in Crécy-au-Mont close to Soissons, thus confirming its interest in this sector.

Wheat, beetroot, potatoes, flax, oilseed rape and hemp are the mainstays of production on this land in the Hauts-de-France region, recognised for its high quality. There is no shortage of development projects in progress to promote the potential of this land.

The 2023 harvest met all these targets, confirming the relevance of a strategy based on crop rotation diversification. Building on this extremely positive momentum, Ovalto has acquired 300 hectares of land located around forty kilometres from Crécy-au-Mont in the small commune of Saintines. The first sowing trials there are particularly promising.

The recent shift towards an increase in the volume of potatoes and a decrease in the production of beetroot is the result of an arbitration, the objective of which is to decrease the percentage of starch in favour of “fresh” products such as fries. In order to achieve this ambitious objective, Agrovalto has also started major work on total irrigation of the farm and enhancing the value of the plots.

Born in 1983 in Amiens, Mathieu Lemoigne grew up in the agricultural world (his parents had a farm) and as soon as he finished his studies he worked in the fertiliser sector.

However, he dreamed of one day becoming a farmer. Jacky Lorenzetti then proposed to Mathieu to join Ovalto and he moved to the majestic farmhouse in Crécy-au-Mont with his wife and two daughters during the first lockdown.

Crécy-Au-Mont optimises its irrigation system

With a view to a sustainable and environmentally friendly economy, Crécy-au-Mont is reinforcing its irrigation system by reactivating a well that has existed since the end of the 19th century. This additional water supply will support the diversification of crops, thus responding to the permanent concern to preserve the quality of the terroir.
